ID Card

Rationale

  • This is a skill building exercise

Goal

  • Take a photo
  • Learn how to open a photo in Photoshop
  • Learn how to crop an image in PhotoShop
  • Learn how to submit an image electronically

Criteria

1) Conceptual Relevance / Content

The content must be:

  1. your picture
  2. your full name
  3. your schedule of classes

2) Instructions

ID Card Instructions

  • Get your picture taken
  • Connect camera to computer / turn camera on
  • Open Photos or iPhoto
  • The Import tab should appear. Turn camera off and on if it doesn't
  • Select photos to Import / Click Import button
  • Select photos to Export (use Command key to select multiple photos)
  • File / Export
  • Export Unmodified Original if no changes have been made
  • In the next dialog box, choose Desktop as your export folder (or create a new folder on the Desktop)
  • Go to the Desktop folder in your Finder
  • Right-click on image / Open With / Adobe Photoshop CS6
  • The photo will open in Photoshop
  • Image / Image Size – Height = 4 inches / Resolution = 180 (constrain proportions should be checked)
  • Use shortcuts to zoom in and out: Command-0 / Command + / Command -
  • Image / Canvas Size – Uncheck the "Relative" box
  • Set the "Anchor" to the left-middle box
  • Choose your Canvas Extension Color = Black, White, Gray, or Other
  • Width = 6.4 inches / Canvas extension colour = foreground (or background)
  • Text tool (T) / Click once to type
  • Add your name / Change font type, colour, and size
  • Layer / Layer Styles / Drop Shadow / Change settings
  • Rectangle tool (two beneath the Text tool) / 10 px / Set colour in options
  • Layer / Layer Styles – Your choice
  • Text tool = Block 1 – Photo 9 (format size/colour/font)
  • Text tool = Mr. Prensky (format size/colour/font)
  • Right-click on the Block 1 layer / Duplicate Layer
  • Move that layer down using the Move tool (top right)
  • Change the text
  • Do the same for Blocks 4 and 5
  • File / Save As
  • Filename = Username_ID.jpg
  • Example = PrenskyR_ID.jpg
  • File Type = JPG/JPEG if complete. Photoshop if not complete
  • Save to Desktop
  • Image Quality = 12
  • Desktop / Finder / New Finder Window / Copy from desktop to Handin Folder / ID Card

3) Elements and Principles of Design

Usually projects are structured to teach different Elements and Principles of Design. However this is a skill building exercise and this aspect will not be assessed.

4) Creativity / Originality

Since this is a skill building exercise, no marks will be assessed for this aspect.

5) Professionalism marked / 10

Professionalism is based on the attention paid to the accurate and careful presentation of the final project.

Upload the completed project to the class Flickr account:
- File name = Lastname_FirstInitial-ID_Card
- Once logged in Click on the arrow to the right of the "You" link
- Select "Upload photos and videos"
- Browse for your file, saved in JPG format
- Select "Private"
- Click on "Add a description"
- Add to the "ID_Card" set
- Click "Save" at the bottom

The card must be

  1. 4 inches tall X 6.4 inches wide
  2. 180 dpi
  3. colour
  4. the photo must be on the left side
  5. the photo must take up half of the card
  6. your information must be on the right side as in the example (in Flickr)
