Colour Triptych

Background

  • Colour is one of the most powerful tools in a photographer's toolkit
  • You will be handing in 3 pictures that feature the same colour
  • All 3 photos should also feature one other Element or Principal of Design (the same one)
    • Shape, Form, Texture, Value, Line
    • Repetition, Contrast, Balance, Proportion, Unity, Perspective
    • Ex - Red Repetition, Blue Shapes, Green Unity, Yellow Perspective
  • Your photos should look like they belong together - consider using a unifying theme, such as:
    • Transportation modes
    • Sports
    • Emotions
    • Animals
    • Technology
    • Wealth
  • You will frame the 3 photos together as a triptych
  • This assignment should challenge you to push your photography skills further. Try using skills like panning, motion blur, zoom blur, HDR, flash, light painting, lighting, shallow depth of field, etc. I'm looking for Photo 12 level work.
  • Each photo should be carefully planned, as explained below

Process

  • Research colour theory and write a 2-paragraph journal entry:
    • what does your chosen colour represent (emotions / attributes)?
    • why did you choose this colour?
    • what subjects could you photograph with this colour?
    • how would those subjects convey the emotions / attributes of your colour?
  • Find a Flickr group that features your chosen colour and get some inspiration
  • Plan what your subjects will be (people, objects, places). Will you need props? Arrange to get them.
  • Plan how you will capture your subjects. Tv or Av? Narrow or wide depth of field? Fast or slow shutter speed?
  • Plan which Element or Principle of Design you will use to further tie the photos together
    • Examples: Green orbs (form and repetition), Blue Repetition, Red Unity, Yellow Proportion, Pink Perspective, Orange Texture
    • Each photo should stand on its own as having an interesting subject, good composition, excellent exposure, professionally edited, etc.
  • Take your photos
  • Get peer feedback
  • Make changes if necessary
  • Follow directions for framing the 3 images together (regular or rounded)
  • Submit your work
