Background

  • You have just been exposed to many inspiring professional photographers
  • Imitation is the highest form of flattery
  • Most artists and photographers learn their craft by attempting to replicate the work of the masters
  • You will choose a photographer to copycat
  • The first option is to reproduce their photos (same subject, lighting, angle, etc)
  • The second option is to make photos "in the style of" the photographer
  • This assignment is designed to be challenging. You must push yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Do not expect a good mark if you put in minimal effort.

Process

  • 2 journal entries
    1. Describe each image that you plan to photography in detail. Give specific information about clothing, props, lighting, camera height, desired depth of field, time of day, location, etc.
    2. Write about the process of capturing each image. Did it work out as you planned? What difficulties did you encounter? What did you learn?
  • You will handin 3 images minimum
  • You may handin more images for bonus marks (if they are excellent images) - these can be from a 2nd photographer
  • I am looking for you to challenge yourself
  • Pick a photographer that you are inspired by and excited about
  • Processing in Photoshop is an important aspect of this assignment

Criteria

1) Correct Content

Have you created images that could easily be mistaken for those of the original photographer? Have you processed your photos artfully and skillfully in Photoshop?

2) Wow! Factor - 60 marks

I want to be impressed. Have you poured yourself into the assignment? Are the images beautiful and/or powerful? Have you gone beyond the expected? Is this something that you would be proud to show to others? Does this belong in your portfolio?

3) Professionalism

Professionalism is based on the attention paid to the accurate and careful presentation of the final project.

  • 3 or more electronically submitted image
  • images must be re-sized: longest side = 9.5 inches before framing
  • image must be 180 dpi
  • images must be in maximum quality JPG format
  • your image must have a frame:
    • Add a title outside the frame: lower center
    • Add a date outside the frame: lower right
    • Add your name outside the frame: lower left

Name your assignment in the following way :

4) Journal Entry

Planning Entry

Describe what you plan to shoot in detail.  Include things like camera angle, zoom, black and white or colour, props, clothing, lighting, facial expression, exposure, etc. Describing the image in detail will help you do a better job in reproducing it. Insert the sample image for each idea.

Reflection Entry

Three paragraphs. After handing in, complete the following write-up in your journal. For each photo, answer the following questions:

Why did you choose this image to copy? Describe your process in copying the image. Are you happy with the results? By copying someone else's style, what thoughts do you have about your own style?
